Scoring Methodology

How we calculate the European Score for every product

How it works

Our algorithm analyzes multiple factors to determine how "European" a product really is. The maximum base score is 95, with up to 10 bonus points available for certifications and proximity, capping at 100 points maximum. Here is the exact weighting:

Corporate Headquarters

35%

We verify if the parent company or controlling entity is based in Europe. This ensures profits and strategic decisions remain within the European economy.

Manufacturing Location

35%

We check where the final product was assembled or manufactured. Manufacturing in Europe supports local jobs and ensures adherence to European labor and environmental standards.

Distribution Network

15%

We analyze the countries where the product is sold. A higher percentage of distribution within European countries implies a shorter supply chain and lower transport footprint.

Ingredient Origin

10%

Whenever possible, we trace the origin of the main ingredients. European ingredients mean support for local agriculture and industry.

EU Certifications

+5% Bonus

Products with recognized European quality schemes (like PDO, PGI, or EU Organic) receive bonus points for their commitment to traditional or sustainable European practices.

Proximity

+5% Bonus

If a product is completely European (HQ, manufacturing, and ingredients), it receives an extra bonus for maximum proximity and minimum carbon footprint.

Transparent Data Sources

Our scoring relies on open databases such as Open Food Facts and Open Library. This collaborative data allows anyone to verify, correct, or enhance the information. If a product lacks transparent data on its origin, its score will reflect that uncertainty.
