What do the scores mean?
Our European scoring system evaluates multiple factors including corporate headquarters, manufacturing location, ingredient origin, distribution, and certifications based on available data. Here are the score thresholds:
The company is based in Europe, the product is manufactured in the EU, and most ingredients/components are of European origin. Ideal for supporting the local economy.
Strong European presence in headquarters, manufacturing, or ingredients. Good option with majority of European factors.
Balanced mix between European and non-European factors (headquarters, manufacturing, ingredients). Consider alternatives with higher scores.
Limited European presence. The company, manufacturing, or most ingredients/components are from outside Europe.
Note: A product with 100 points means all its known ingredients are of European origin and it is manufactured in Europe. This reduces the carbon footprint of transportation and supports the local economy.
How is the European score calculated?
Our algorithm analyzes information available in Open Food Facts and other public data to determine:
- Ingredient origin: We analyze origin labels (en:spain, en:france, etc.)
- Manufacturing country: We verify where the product is produced
- Origin categories: We evaluate what percentage of ingredient categories are European
- Weighting: We give more weight to main ingredients
Transparency: Our methodology is open source. If a product does not have enough information, the score may not be accurate. We encourage users to contribute data to Open Food Facts.
Scoring Methodology →Why choose European products?
Lower carbon footprint
Local products = less transport = less CO₂ emissions
Quality standards
The EU has some of the strictest regulations in the world for food safety
Support local economy
Buying European products supports jobs and businesses in your region
Traceability
Greater transparency in the supply chain and origin of ingredients
Why do some known products have low scores?
Many brands we perceive as "traditional" have been acquired by large multinational conglomerates outside Europe, or have moved their production to other continents. Our mission is to give visibility to this fact.
What types of products can I scan?
You can scan food products, cosmetics, pet food, household products (cleaning, etc.), and books (ISBN). Our system automatically detects the product type and applies the appropriate scoring algorithm.
What data do you use?
We use open databases from the Open Food Facts ecosystem (Food, Beauty, Pet Food, Household Products) and Open Library for books. These databases contain collaborative information on millions of products worldwide.
Can I contribute?
Yes! You can add or correct products on Open Food Facts (food, beauty, pet food, household products) or Open Library (books). Changes will be reflected in our app automatically.
