The Ultimate Guide to European Food Labels: From Nutri-Score to DOP
Walking through a European supermarket can feel like navigating a sea of acronyms. From the colourful Nutri-Score logo on a cereal box to the prestigious red and yellow DOP seal on a block of cheese, these labels are designed to inform us. But what do they really mean? At EU Product Score, we believe that understanding these labels is the first step toward making smarter, more conscious purchasing decisions.
This guide will demystify the most common food labels you'll encounter, explaining how they work, what they guarantee, and how they relate to our own European Score.
Part 1: The Health & Sustainability Scores
These labels provide an "at-a-glance" assessment of a product's impact on your health or the planet. They are powerful tools for quick decision-making in the shopping aisle.
Nutri-Score: Your Nutritional Traffic Light
What is it? The Nutri-Score is a front-of-pack nutritional label that rates food and drinks from A (healthiest) to E (least healthy) using a colour-coded scale. Think of it as an energy rating for your food.
How does it work? An algorithm calculates a score based on the nutrients per 100g or 100ml. It balances "negative" elements (high calories, sugar, saturated fats, salt) against "positive" elements (fibre, protein, and the percentage of fruits, vegetables, and nuts).
- A (Dark Green): The best nutritional quality.
- B (Light Green): Good nutritional quality.
- C (Yellow): Average nutritional quality.
- D (Orange): Low nutritional quality.
- E (Red): The lowest nutritional quality.
The Controversy: While helpful, Nutri-Score isn't perfect. It has been criticized for oversimplifying complex nutritional profiles. For example, traditional products like olive oil can receive a "C" rating because the algorithm penalizes all fats, even healthy monounsaturated ones. It's a useful tool for comparing similar products (e.g., two different breakfast cereals), but not a replacement for reading the full ingredient list.
How it relates to the European Score: While we display a product's Nutri-Score, it doesn't directly influence our European Score, which is focused on origin and economic impact. A product can have a Nutri-Score 'E' but a European Score of 100 if it's made entirely in its home country with local ingredients. You can learn more at our FAQ page.
Eco-Score: The Planet's Report Card
What is it? Similar to Nutri-Score, the Eco-Score is a label from A to E that evaluates the environmental impact of a food product throughout its lifecycle.
How does it work? The calculation is complex, starting with a base score from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provided by Agribalyse, a French public database. The LCA considers everything from farming and transportation to processing and packaging. The score is then adjusted with a system of bonuses and penalties:
- Bonus Points: Awarded for things like organic certification, local sourcing, and positive impacts on biodiversity.
- Penalty Points: Applied for factors like sourcing from countries with high deforestation rates or using unsustainable fishing methods.
A low Eco-Score might indicate ingredients sourced from far away or resource-intensive production, while a high score suggests a more planet-friendly choice.
Part 2: The "Terroir" Labels - Guaranteeing Authenticity & Origin
These are perhaps the most quintessentially European labels. They don't just tell you what a product is, but where it's from and how it was made, protecting centuries of tradition. These are collectively known as Geographical Indications (GIs).
DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta / PDO): The Gold Standard
Known as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in English, this is the strictest certification. To earn the coveted red and yellow seal, a product must meet two non-negotiable conditions:
- Its quality and characteristics are essentially due to its geographical environment (including both natural and human factors).
- Every single step of its production, processing, AND preparation must take place in that specific, defined region.
Think of Parmigiano-Reggiano. To be called that, the cheese must be made in a specific area of Italy (around Parma, Reggio Emilia, etc.), using milk from local cows fed on local forage, and following a centuries-old, legally-defined recipe. Nothing can be outsourced. This is why products with a DOP label often receive a very high European Score on our platform.
PGI / IGP (Protected Geographical Indication): A Mark of Reputation
The Indicazione Geografica Protetta (IGP), or PGI in English, is slightly more flexible, but still a powerful guarantee of quality. The blue and yellow seal guarantees that:
- The product possesses a specific quality, reputation, or characteristic attributable to its geographical origin.
- At least one of the stages of production, processing, or preparation takes place in the defined region.
A great example is Aceto Balsamico di Modena (Balsamic Vinegar of Modena). While the reputation is intrinsically tied to Modena, the grapes might be grown elsewhere in Italy. However, the crucial aging process, following traditional methods, must happen in the Modena region.
TSG (Traditional Speciality Guaranteed): Protecting the Recipe, Not the Place
This label is the odd one out. It doesn't protect the origin, but rather the traditional recipe or method of production. A Neapolitan pizza (Pizza Napoletana) is a famous example. It can be made anywhere in the world, but to be called a "Pizza Napoletana TSG," it must follow the exact, officially registered recipe—from the type of flour and tomatoes to the oven temperature.
Conclusion: Knowledge is Power
These labels are more than just stickers; they are a window into a product's journey from the farm to your table.
- Nutri-Score & Eco-Score give you quick insights into health and sustainability.
- DOP & PGI guarantee authenticity, tradition, and a direct link to a specific European region.
By understanding them, you can make choices that align with your values, whether that's prioritizing nutrition, sustainability, or supporting local European heritage. And when you combine this knowledge with the data from our European Score scanner, you have everything you need to be a truly empowered consumer.
